CODA Shelter

For many women and children who have experienced the frightening reality of domestic violence, their first opportunity to feel truly safe is within the walls of a CODA bedroom. They can sleep peacefully, knowing they will not be terrorized or attacked.

The comfortable 6,000 square foot facility includes six bedrooms which sleep up to 24 residents, a large living area, a children's room, a laundry facility, a spacious, modern kitchen where residents take turns preparing meals and a private, fenced-in play area for children.

In close proximity to the residents are the domestic violence counselor, children's counselor, children's activities coordinator, legal advocates and case manager.

If approved, clients may stay up to sixty days in the shelter.(Obviously, breaking any shelter rules may result in a resident being asked to leave prior to that time.)

Realizing that sixty days can speed by, CODA requires that residents access individual and group counseling as well as case management in order to prepare for the time when they move from shelter to other arrangements.

All CODA services remain accessible to former residents, however, through its out-reach program. Often clients will attend outreach group counseling after they have left the shelter.

CODA staff understand that women return to their abusers often six to nine times before they are able to make a final break. (See: "Why Women Stay.") For that reason, CODA encourages former clients whose situation has become dangerous once more to call without fear of prejudice.

Male victims of domestic violence and women with male children 18 or more years old are offered other options for shelter.
